Small Business Initiatives for Innovative Tools and Technologies for Improving Outcomes for Maternal Health – Due Dates Vary

This NOSI is intended to encourage interest in the small business community to develop various approaches, technologies, and tools to address the health issues of maternal morbidity and mortality (MMM) by achieving a wide array of outcomes, such as 1) the identification, phenotyping, subtyping, and stratification of patients at a greater risk of MMM, 2) multi-level interventions to address racial disparities in MMM, and 3) clinical decision-making that considers social and cultural biases. It focuses on the development and validation of tools, technologies, and approaches, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, that indicate states of increased risk for and presence of MMM.

SBIR/STTR Commercialization Readiness Pilot Program Technical Assistance and Late-Stage Development (SB1, Clinical Trial Not Allowed) – Due Dates Vary

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to encourage applications from small business concerns (SBCs) to the newly re-authorized Commercialization Readiness Pilot program. The NOFO aims to facilitate the transition of previously or currently funded SBIR and STTR Phase II and Phase IIB projects to the commercialization stage by providing additional support for technical assistance and later stage research and development not typically supported through Phase II or Phase IIB grants or contracts.

Preclinical Proof of Concept Studies for Rare Diseases (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) – Due Dates Vary

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) provides funding to conduct efficacy studies in an established rare disease preclinical model to demonstrate that a proposed therapeutic agent warrants further development. The goal of this NOFO is to spur therapeutic development for rare diseases by advancing projects to the point where they would attract subsequent investment supporting full Investigational New Drug (IND) application development or progression to clinical trials in the case of repurposing or repositioning.

Georgia CF Research and Development Program – LOIs due September 1

The Cystic Fibrosis Research Program is preparing an application for “Georgia CF Research and Development Program” grant from CF Foundation. This will include a pilot grant program, with at least two grants at either $60k/year or $80k/year direct costs for 1-2 years. Note: Proposals submitted for other recent opportunities are welcome to be reused, if relevant to RDP grant’s goals. Collaborative Partnership to Advance Global Health Research (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) – Due September 2

The goal of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to develop, establish, implement, and maintain a successful collaborative partnership to advance NIH priorities, support NIH collaboration on global health, and advance biomedical research internationally. This program will support a partnership between the NIH and the recipient(s) with the commitment and capacity to help extend NIH research-related programs worldwide.

Accelerating Behavioral and Social Science through Ontology Development and Use: Research Network Projects – LOIs due September 3

This funding opportunity invites applications to support research projects focused on the expansion of existing or development of new ontologies for behavioral or social science research (BSSR). The research projects must include multi-disciplinary teams of subject matter experts in one or more BSSR fields, as well as ontology-related informatics and computational approaches. Projects should address health-related behavioral and social science problems not easily solved without improvement in semantic knowledge structures (e.g., controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and ontologies).

Improving Minority Health and Eliminating Health Disparities – Due September 6

Two Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) ( Technologies and Innovations for Healthy Living ) invites eligible United States small business concerns (SBCs) to submit Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant applications that propose to develop a product, process, or service for commercialization with the aim of improving minority health and/or reducing and ultimately eliminating health disparities in one or more NIH-defined populations that experience health disparities. Appropriate technologies should be effective, affordable, and culturally acceptable.

* Emory SOM Image, Innovate, and Impact (I3) GCMI Research Awards RFP – Due October 24

In partnership with Georgia CTSA, SOM is soliciting Emory proposals that will accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries to health benefits through collaborations between Emory and GCMI. Proposals are intended to improve patient care by more effectively and efficiently developing and commercializing devices and products through preclinical and product development services. Collaborations with GCMI are required.

* NIH Build UP Trust Challenge – Due November 14

The NIH Build UP Trust Challenge seeks solutions that increase research participation and the adoption of medical care by building trust and improving engagement with historically underserved communities. The NIH Build UP Trust prize challenge aims to identify new and promising scalable strategies that increase research participation and the adoption of existing and new tools and approaches to detect, treat, and monitor diseases, conditions, and disorders by improving engagement with minority health populations and populations with health disparities .

MSCR 515 – Scientific Communication for Clinical & Translational Science – Due August 18

Faculty and postdocs are invited to enroll in a fall semester elective course in the Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) and Certificate Program in Translational Science (CPTS) in the Emory University Laney Graduate School. Tuition awards are not available, but faculty and postdocs at Emory may be eligible for the Emory Courtesy Scholarship if employed at least one year. This virtual course is 1-credit and will meet Thursdays from 2:00-3:00pm starting September 7 through November 9. For more information and instructions on how to enroll, contact Rachel Hardison.

Phlebotomy 101 Training – August 24 & 25

Phlebotomy 101 is a two-day introductory classroom and clinical hands-on training that teaches the techniques of venipuncture to research coordinators monthly and is led by GCRC nurses. The course is only offered to Emory, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), and the University of Georgia (UGA) faculty and staff. C3i Validation and Execution Program – Due August 25

The National Institutes of Health is providing an opportunity for academic and small business grantees to participate in an entrepreneurial training and mentorship course aimed at providing business frameworks and essential tools to successfully translate biomedical technology from the lab to the market through our commercialization assistance program. To be eligible to participate, you must have an NIBIB-funded grant award (R41, R42, R43, R44, R00, R01, U01, P41) that is active or in a No-Cost Extension through May 2024.

Lab2Launch

Lab2Launch is the first-of-its-kind shared laboratory at Emory University designed to support scientist-entrepreneurs in a community-driven environment in taking their discoveries from the lab to market, located on the 1st floor of the new Health Sciences and Research Building II. Geared towards Emory-affiliated founders and innovators, Lab2Launch provides critical offerings such as access to scalable lab spaces, top-of-the-line instrumentation, and events and programming. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program

The Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program from the Small Business Administration is meant to help increase the quantity, quality, and diversity of SBIR/STTR applications from each for the states. For startups in the state of Georgia that are competitive for an SBIR/STTR, we are able to offer $2450 to help cover the upfront fee of hiring a grant writing consultant to help that startup craft and submit their SBIR/STTR.
