2022 Southeast Regional Clinical and Translational Science Conference Highlights

Nearly 300 researchers across the Southeast presented the best new health-related preclinical, clinical, implementation, and population- based research. NCATS Acting Director Joni L. Rutter, PhD, remarked, “Great talks and posters showing impact on health equity and advancing translational science!” During the Keynote, ‘NCATS: Where Science Goes to Become Health’, Dr. Rutter added, “Without the CTSA Program, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

RADx COVID-19 Research Testing Site at Executive Park. Spread the News!

Emory, Georgia Tech, and Children’s are working with NIH’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) program to evaluate and bring more COVID tests to market and recently opened a new COVID testing site at 59 Executive Park South NE. Symptomatic individuals who agree to participate in the research will receive a gift card and no cost PCR COVID test. Visits last approximately 30 minutes.

* Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1 - Clinical Trial Optional) – Internal Due March 15

FOA to support highly integrated research teams of three to six PDs/PIs to address ambitious and challenging research questions that are important for the mission of NIGMS and are beyond the scope of one or two investigators. Collaborative program teams are expected to accomplish goals that require considerable synergy and managed team interactions. Project goals should not be achievable with a collection of individual efforts or projects. Teams are encouraged to consider far-reaching objectives that will produce major advances in their fields.

SOM I3 Nexus Research Awards – Due March 24

In partnership with the Georgia CTSA, the Emory SOM I3 (Imagine, Innovate, and Impact) Nexus Research Awards will provide seed money to fundamental biological and translational investigators for obtaining sufficient data to ultimately develop external collaborative funding applications, and to investigators who may not otherwise engage in multi- and interdisciplinary research. These awards require interdisciplinary team collaboration.

* Immune Drivers of Autoimmune Disease (IDAD) (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) – Internal Due March 28

FOA invites applications to participate in the Immune Drivers of Autoimmune Disease cooperative research program, which will focus on defining the immunologic states and dynamics that drive autoimmune disease. Main objective: enhance our understanding of the immunologic processes, events, and changes that underlie the clinical manifestations of autoimmune diseases, including disease flare, remission, and progression of established disease, as well as the progression from a state of elevated risk to clinical diagnosis of autoimmune disease.

Georgia CTSA Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design – Due March 31

Georgia CTSA’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Research Design (BERD) program is soliciting proposals to support novel methodological research in biostatistics, epidemiology, or health services research to advance clinical and translational research (CTR). Review criteria include quantitative methodological research to fill gaps in CTR, innovation, feasibility, and plans for dissemination and translation of results.

* CFAR-Series Mentored Pilot Grant Program – LOI Due April 1

Emory CFAR will fund a variable number of one-year pilot awards up to $40K for research projects that aim to advance HIV prevention, treatment, care and/or cure strategies. There are two opportunities available: 1) a CFAR-03 to help faculty generate preliminary data to strengthen the competitiveness of subsequent NIH applications that align with NIH/OAR high-priority areas of HIV research and 2) a CFAR-K to provide funds that segment or extend HIV-relevant NIH K research funding. Early stage HIV investigators and independent investigators who are new to HIV research are eligible to apply.

The Warshaw Fellow Research Award and Buchter Resident Research Award were created in 2017 to encourage pediatric trainees to engage in high quality research, provide a mechanism to fund trainee projects, and enhance the research environment at Children's. The goals of this FOA are to implement and rigorously evaluate SARS-CoV-2 rapid testing strategies in communities experiencing COVID-19 health disparities. These two-year Rapid Testing Research Projects will evaluate (1) rapid testing interventions to prevent and control COVID-19 transmission among underserved and vulnerable populations and (2) partnership-driven research to implement and evaluate rapid testing and reduce COVID-19 disparities.

Underrepresented Biomedical Researchers Faculty Summit – Apply by March 14

Early Career Faculty and Senior Post-Doctoral Fellows are invited to apply to the first annual Summit funded by the Molecular and Human Genetics Department at Baylor College of Medicine. This 3-day summit supports underrepresented researchers (multiple disciplines) interested in using the NIH All of Us Research Platform . Participants will form multidisciplinary research teams to address a common research question using the All of Us data, receive data science training, mentoring, and professional development sessions. Applicants selected to attend the summit are accepted into the All of Us UBR Scholars Program, a year-long program to support the multidisciplinary research teams.

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Biomedical Engineering is launching the NIH Technology Accelerator Challenge for Maternal Health. RADx COVID-19 Research Testing

Emory, Georgia Tech, and Children's are working with NIH’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) program to evaluate and bring more tests to market. Participants will receive a $50 gift card and free PCR COVID test. RADx is currently seeking symptomatic participants who may have COVID-19. Samples will be collected at 59 Executive Park South NE, Atlanta, by an experienced research coordinator or nurse, and you may receive a test kit with instructions to conduct a test on yourself or your child.
